Sossusvlei at a glance
Wildlife
Sossusvlei’s wildlife is a testament to the remarkable adaptability of species in the Namib Desert. Large mammals like the oryx, springbok, and ostrich are commonly seen, and all evolved with time to survive the intense heat and limited water. The landscape is home to several smaller creatures such as geckos, beetles, and scorpions. The brown Hyena found in these landscapes is a very rare catch.
Vegetation
The vegetation of Sossusvlei is sparse but remarkably adapted to the extremely arid conditions of the Namib Desert. Acacia trees and other grasses and small shrubs dot the desert landscape, surviving on the minimal rainfall and moisture from morning fog. Sossusvlei’s vegetation plays a crucial role in supporting its delicate desert ecosystem, despite the region’s seemingly barren appearance.
