Kanha National Park

The inspiration for Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book

Mystical old growth forests & grasslands

Kanha’s tale of conservation and restoration is probably the most impressive of all Central Indian parks. In 1970 when Barasingha Deer was verging on extinction with only 66 odd individuals left, Kanha authorities banded together with the locals to initiate a breeding program, reduce poaching, relocate farms, and rebuild the natural habitat. Today, more than a thousand individual Barasinghas roam Kanha alongside tigers, leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs and more.

Kanha at a Glance

Kanha Landscape | Ameliya Safaris

Two main species attract most of the people to Kanha- The Barasingha (the state animal of Madhya Pradesh), a magnificent swamp deer known for its impressive antlers, and the Tiger. However, the park also shelters a diverse array of wildlife, including 40 species of mammals such as leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs, the rare Asian Otters, the Indian Gaur, and over 250 species of birds.

The Kanha National Park is surrounded by the mighty Maikal hills of Satpura, with a striking landscape of lush meadows and grasslands, interspersed with dense forest and dotted with crystal clear streams. While the highland forests boast impressive bamboo and Indian ghost trees, the major flora here consists of the evergreen Sal and seasonal Saja, Lendia, Dhawa, Tendu, Palash, and Bija.
