Located in the northern reaches of Kafue National Park, the Busanga Plains are one of Zambia’s most remarkable wildlife landscapes. This vast seasonal floodplain transforms dramatically throughout the year, shifting from flooded wetlands to expansive grasslands as the waters recede.
The open terrain creates exceptional visibility and some of the most atmospheric wildlife encounters in Zambia. With few camps and limited access, Busanga offers a true sense of remoteness, where the rhythm of the safari is shaped by the seasons, the floodwaters and the movement of wildlife across the plains

Wildlife
The Busanga Plains are particularly renowned for their large concentrations of red lechwe, puku and other plains game. These abundant herbivores support a thriving predator population, including lion, cheetah and leopard.
The plains are also one of the best places in Zambia to encounter the rare and highly endangered African wild dog. During the dry season, wildlife gathers around the remaining water, creating exceptional opportunities for observing predator-prey interactions across the open floodplain.
The birdlife is equally impressive, with seasonal wetlands attracting a remarkable diversity of waterbirds and raptors
Vegetation
The character of Busanga Plains is dictated by water. During the rainy season, the floodplain is transformed into a vast wetland, with channels and shallow pools spreading across the landscape. As the waters retreat, rich grasses emerge, creating open grazing grounds for enormous concentrations of antelope.
Scattered islands of woodland and termite mounds rise above the plains, providing shelter and elevated vantage points for wildlife. This ever-changing landscape is one of the defining features of the Busanga experience.
