Wildlife

The entire forest area of the Gir National Park is dry and deciduous which provides the best habitat for Asiatic Lions and Leopards. Apart from these two animals the park is home to two Deer and Chowsingha – the world’s only four horned antelope. More than 425 species of birds,  including raptors like the Egyptian vulture, and Smaller Carnivores like the Jackal, striped Hyena and India Fox make Gir Forest an even more interesting safari destination.

Vegetation

Featuring diverse vegetation that plays a crucial role in supporting its rich wildlife, Gir is predominantly covered by dry deciduous forests with dominant species like Teak and Sal, which shed their leaves during the dry season. Mixed deciduous forests, with trees such as Jamun and Tendu, provide excellent cover for animals. Scrub and thorn forests like Babul and Ber thrive in the more arid areas. Scattered grasslands offer grazing for herbivores and riverine vegetation along water bodies including trees like Banyan and Neem contribute to water retention and soil conservation. This variety of flora supports the park’s complex ecosystem and its famous Asiatic lions.
