Lake Kariba, located in northern Zimbabwe along the Zambezi Valley, is the world’s largest man-made lake by volume. Formed by damming the Zambezi River at Kariba Gorge, it covers over 5,580 square kilometres and borders Zimbabwe’s Matusadona National Park along its southern shore. The lake offers a rare safari experience where wildlife viewing happens as much on the water as it does on land, with elephants swimming between islands, hippos and crocodiles lining its banks, and one of Africa’s densest lion populations prowling the surrounding hills. Wildlife
Lake Kariba and neighbouring Matusadona National Park support an exceptional concentration of Big Five game, with Matusadona known for having one of the highest lion densities in Africa and a stronghold population of black rhino. Elephant and buffalo gather along the shoreline in large numbers, drawn by the lush grasses at the water’s edge, while zebra and impala roam the surrounding plains. The lake itself teems with life: hippos and Nile crocodiles are a near-constant sight, and over forty species of fish, including the prized tiger fish, make it one of Southern Africa’s premier sport fishing destinations. Birdlife is equally rich, with African fish eagles, herons, cormorants, and kingfishers commonly seen along the water. Wildlife viewing here happens both on foot and by boat, giving visitors a rare dual perspective rarely found elsewhere in Zimbabwe.
Vegetation
The land surrounding Lake Kariba is a mix of shoreline grassland, mopane woodland, and mountain acacia woodland rising up the escarpment behind Matusadona National Park. Along the water’s edge, the skeletal remains of giant leadwood trees, partially submerged when the lake was created, rise out of the shallows, creating one of the region’s most photographed and atmospheric backdrops. Further inland, dense woodlands give way to open plains that support the grazing herds drawn to the lake. This combination of aquatic, grassland, and woodland habitats makes the wider Kariba region one of Zimbabwe’s most ecologically varied safari destinations.
