Wildlife

Hwange National Park is home to one of the largest elephant populations in the world, along with a rich diversity of other wildlife. Visitors can spot lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffalo, and endangered African wild dogs roaming the park’s vast savannahs and woodlands. It also boasts over 400 bird species, making it a birdwatcher’s paradise. Hwange’s diverse habitats, from open grasslands to dense woodlands, support a thriving ecosystem, offering extraordinary opportunities to see animals in their natural environment, especially during the dry season when they gather around the park’s numerous waterholes.

Vegetation

Hwange National Park features a diverse range of vegetation, which supports its rich wildlife. The park is primarily characterized by savannah grasslands, interspersed with acacia, baobab, and thorn trees. These trees provide essential shade and forage for herbivores like elephants and giraffes. The park also includes areas of mixed woodlands, dominated by miombo and mopane trees, which create important habitats for various bird species and small mammals. Seasonal wetlands and waterholes play a vital role in the ecosystem, especially during the dry season, when vegetation becomes sparse, attracting numerous animals seeking water and food. This rich array of plant life contributes significantly to the park’s biodiversity and ecological health.
